headliner is a platform for music lovers to plan their concert travel. From planning logistics before your trip, to exploring the area of your concert arena, create your full trip itinerary in headliner. headliner also allows you to easily access your concert information, including ticket details, your seat map, merchandise, and food options, all within one swipe providing full transparency. Further enhance your concert experience using our light-stick feature which syncs your phone's flashlight to the beat of the song during a live concert.

As project manager, I designated roles and allocated tasks between Chloe and I. I also create lo, mid, and hi fidelity wireframe iterations and created the visuals and brand guide.

Planning and travel logistics is stressful

We all know the stress of travel, and the time and planning it takes. Sometimes it can even reduce your experience on your trip. For music lovers who often travel for concerts, they also struggle with the lack of itinerary, especially before and after attending a concert. Travel logistics and budgeting cause stress which reduces their enjoyment while attending a concert.

So how might we make the travel experience more stress-free and memorable for music lovers?

Music travel is growing

First, is there an even market for this? We found that the market size of the concert and event promotion industry was $65 billion before 2023 and the industry has grown 9.1% per year on average between 2018 and 2023 (IBIS World).

In fact, "over 50% of consumer spending on music is attributed to live events, citing the ‘live music experience’ as a reason," according to Nielsen Holdings.

Gaining empathy

To understand our audience further, we sent out a survey to inquire about people’s experiences while traveling for music, in which 25 people responded. We also conducted three interviews where we asked more in-depth questions about their experience with traveling for music. Our key takeaways were:

  1. Logistics and budgeting is challenging

Most of our users struggle with travel logistics and budgeting, yet they still want to explore more outside of the music venue, depending on location. They feel excited during their planning phase, but stress from logistics can bring them down.

  1. There needs to be balance

They want transparency in everything; hidden information can cause them anxiety. At the same time though, information overload can dilute the experience and lacks an emotional aspect.

  1. It can feel too rushed

The music travel experience feels rushed for users; there’s little time for reflection and they find the post-concert phase disappointing.

The three phases of concert travel

From our user surveys and interviews, we created a user journey map emphasizing three phases we want headliner to target: the planning phase before travel, the concert phase, and the post-concert phase.

Iterations galore

We then sketched out lo-fidelity wireframes which we quickly transferred into multiple mi-fidelity iterations.

Testing our design

We tested five different music lovers and created a set of six tasks for them to complete within our app. We recorded our success rate and asked them for feedback about what they liked and what they think can be improved on. We then took the insights from user testing and made improvements to our screens.

  1. Add a concert (using a qr code) = 80%

  2. Find your concert info = 100%

  3. Find your itinerary = 80%

  4. Add Ponce City Market to your itinerary = 80%

  5. Find light-stick = 80%

  6. Look at your profile for memories = 100%

Final Takeaways

  1. Iteration is key

Chloe and I worked through numerous obstacles throughout this project and created many iterations. It's okay to make mistakes! I've learned it's better to explore a multitude of possibilities and build upon them after feedback.

  1. Look at the niche

When we were first brainstorming topics to explore for this project, we hit a wall. It wasn't until we started looking into niche audiences and niche interests that we found one that worked for us!

  1. UX is right for me :)

This was my first UX project, so of course there's room for improvement, but I've discovered I love the process of exploration, designing, and testing. This is the right path for me!
